“I have to write 3 or 4 songs every day to feel fulfilled. And sometimes they’re really bad. But the more you do, the closer you get to something that’s actually worth listening to. "
Basque-Greek singer and songwriter Matiss Evreoux shared his thoughts on music, movies, and style.
What brought you to music?
“I’ve always wanted to work in music. I grew up listening to the Velvet Underground and David Bowie and Jefferson Airplane – mainly ’60s bands from psychedelic rock. And I think it was the influence of my older siblings. I thought they were really cool. But then I realized that I was really good at making melodies myself. It came very naturally to me. So I started when I was 14, working with producers. And then when I was 16, I got signed to a label. And when I turned 18, I used UCLA as an excuse to move to LA.”
Can you describe a typical day in your life?
“I have to write 3 or 4 songs every day to feel fulfilled. And sometimes they’re really bad. But the more you do, the closer you get to something that’s actually worth listening to. And I work with producers and have sessions for other people. I’m playing at South by Southwest, too, so at the moment, I’m just rehearsing a lot. Just figuring out what my shows are gonna be like. I’ve never been to Texas, so hopefully that’ll be fun.”
What do you do for fun?
“I skateboard. And I love walking around LA, getting lost, reading. I’ve been obsessed with movies for a long time, and my boyfriend’s a screenwriter, so we’re both always trying to figure out what’s coming next, if there’s anything interesting to watch. I don’t know if I’m interested in pursuing anything in film, but I love movies, and it inspired me to make music. Sometimes I think of songs that would match certain films, and that’s how I make music.”
How do you like LA?
“I don’t wanna live anywhere else. I just wanna live here forever. It took me a while to realize, but I’ve been here long enough to get to know the city, and get a circle of friends that’s really cohesive. And if I work in music I can only live here or London or New York, and I’m not interested in those cities.”
How do you feel in American Apparel?
“I love simple things. Just a nice cotton, nice quality, something that’s very breathable. I love wearing American Apparel when I work out. And I love a plain white t-shirt with a little detail. Love denim jackets, too, so I’m definitely a fan. And I’m glad it’s back.”
