Angel is a biology student, yoga instructor, and self-described "student of life" who is featured in our "How We Play" campaign.
Can you walk us through a typical day in your life?
"A typical day would entail me being in school between 9am and 5pm on most days, followed by holing myself up in the library. I also work in the herbarium on campus, and just started a statewide phenology project. When I'm not in school I am most likely roller skating somewhere in Long Beach, doing yoga at my favorite studio, or listening to live music at a local store."
Since you're featured in our "How We Play" campaign, how do you play in your own life?
"I am the goofy yet intelligent one in my family and love to make people laugh. I also love to express myself through dance and singing, so you can find me at dance classes or doing karaoke. One of my favorite social things to do is play pool at a local dive bar with my friends. Actively, I'm usually exercising outside whether that's lifting weights, cycling, or running. I'm always doing something."
How would you describe your own personal style?
"That's a tough one. I get a lot of compliments when I go out like, "I just love your whole look," but I still don't know what that look is! I don't wear a lot of jewelry, but I LOVE hats. I have everything from beanies and dad hats to fedoras and wide brimmed hats. My shoes range from Chelsea boots and booties to Birkenstocks and running shoes. I like to be stylish and comfortable. I've cut off all of my hair and put a design on the side, and then grew it out and dyed it platinum blonde because I got bored. I suppose I would describe my style as "subtly eccentric" on some days, and "normcore" on most days."
What are your 3 favorite American Apparel styles?
"My overall favorite piece is the Mix Modal men's shirt, because it is the most comfortable shirt I've ever worn. I also love the Ponte Deep Cut Dress because it shows off your curves and has an open back. Last but not least is the yellow Duckie Coat because it's bold, stylish, and practical."
Who (or what) inspires you and why?
"Anyone who has been faced with a great deal of adversity and did not let that dim their light. Anyone who "broke the mold" or "forged their own path" when people around them may have tried to discourage them from following their dreams. People who won't take "no" for an answer. These types of people inspire me because I know what it is like to want to conform and take the safe way out and to not be sure about your passions. So when I see examples of people daring to be their most amazing self, it inspires me to keep going."
