The model sounds off on surfing, cooking, and getting fired.
Can you walk us through a typical day in your life?
“I have a pretty simple life. Unless I have an early call time, I wake up at sunrise most mornings and check the local surf report. If the waves are good, then I’ll go surfing; if they’re not good, then I stay home and make coffee. From there the rest of the day is pretty much determined by the weather. I also love cooking and make most of my meals myself, so a good amount of time goes to food prep and clean up. I try and read or watch something informative everyday; yesterday I finished Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell and tonight I plan on starting Chasing the Scream by Johann Hari. I’m also a standup comedy fan and spend an embarrassing amount of time watching and listening to comedy podcasts, which kind of negates all of the studying. Before I modeled full time, I worked at a mattress store and spent nearly 50 hours a week trapped in a boring quiet store by myself, so I really feel like I haven’t worked since then. I got fired nearly a year ago when I got caught skipping work because I was at an Adidas photoshoot!”
Who (or what) inspires you and why?
“There are too many people and things that inspire me to list out, but the person who inspires me the most is my dad, and the thing that inspires me the most is love. I know both of those may sound super corny, but my dad has one of the most inspirational life stories I’ve heard, and love is the key to healing the world. Real love, though – not just being nice to people.”
Since you're featured in our "How We Play" campaign, how do you play in your own life?
“I surf, occasionally skate, ride my bike, go on long beach runs, workout, try and find interesting and healthy recipes to cook for myself and friends. And I also love finding new music and dancing around the apartment when my roommate is at work.”
How would you describe your own personal style?
“I don’t know if I can really describe it because it changes all the time, but lately I’ve really been enjoying the resurgence of the ’90s style.”
What are your 3 favorite American Apparel styles?
“The Shaun Ross #InMySkinIWin campaign; the beachwear (obviously); and fleece hoodies.”
